270 jobs at Bardon Mill pit were in jeopardy: while there was plenty of coal in the mine, it was difficult to get. This made the fight for production harder. The mine was dripping wet in certain parts. The fact that 11 pits have closed in Northumberland and Durham in the first four months of this year does not help assure the future of Bardon Mill, which is a comparatively small pit. In 1962, 586,000 tons of coal were produced; in 1963, there were 423,000 tons and figures are continuing to drop. |
