The Honourable Francis Bowes-Lyon, an uncle of the then queen, now the Queen Mother, died at his Beltingham Hall home, near Bardon Mill, on 17th February 1948 at the age of 91, within six days of his 92nd birthday. He moved to Beltingham Hall when the Army took over Ridley Hall. He was born at Glamis Castle, a member of one of the oldest Scottish families. He was educated at Eton and served with the auxiliary forces for many years and had been a member of the King?s bodyguard for Scotland since 1881. For 11 years he commanded the 2nd volunteer battalion of the Black Watch. As Master of the Queen?s Archers, he shared the honour of holding the umbrella over Queen Victoria?s head for over four years. As a magistrate for Northumberland since 1890, he was a deputy lieutenant for Northumberland and Forfarshire. He was keenly interested in all country pursuits and was president of the Haydon Bridge Floral and Horticultural Society. He married in 1883 Lady Anne Catherine Sybil Lindsay, daughter of the 25th Earl of Crawford and Balcarres. His wife died in 1936 at the age of 77.
