Chollerford and Chollerton 1904-07-16 There were fears of a major smallpox outbreak at Walwick Camp near Humshaugh. The infection was discovered in a bandsman, who had been mingling with almost 1000 other men at the camp, all but one of whom were vaccinated.

Chollerford and Chollerton 1921-05-28 The death was reported at the George Hotel, Chollerford, on Saturday, 21st May 1921, of James Simmonds, aged 62, husband of Mirian Simmonds. The death occurred suddenly on Friday night of Mr. James Simmonds, proprietor of the George Hotel, Chollerford. In his younger days, Mr. Simmonds carried on a tailoring business at Humshaugh. He was a member of the Church of England and as a chorister, up to the time of his marriage, he rendered invaluable service to the Church. Mr. Simmonds was a staunch conservative and acted as local agent for the Hexham Unionist Association. He was also a keen angler, being secretary of the Humshaugh Angling Club for many years. He is survived by his wife. The interment took place on Tuesday (24th May) in Humshaugh churchyard. [There follows a long list of those present at the funeral. Mr. H. C. Wood represented Mrs. N. G. Clayton of Chesters and Mr. A. M. Allgood of Walwick Grange.]
