See, hear and absorb the fascinating history of this special part of Northumberland.
HERITAGE CENTRE CLOSED. In order to protect our visitors and volunteers and in light of the new Covid related restrictions announced for the North East, we have decided to close the Heritage Centre this weekend and probably next whilst we monitor the situation and await developments. Thursday 17th September. We will update the website and social media to keep you updated. Our apologies and we hope to see you soon.
Have you got an image?
We are living in extraordinary times and we have launched an ambitious project to develop a photographic record of the impact of the Coronavirus on everyday life. We are asking people who live, work and visit the North Tyne and Redesdale area to help by capturing images on their phones and cameras of how Covid-19 is affecting their lives and communities.
We would like to invite you to take photographs of life under lockdown and the effects of the virus as you go about your everyday lives.
We have now made some of our Digital Collections available online. There are over 54,000 names in our ancestry database, nearly 2,000 Courant clippings and nearly 2,000 images from the Collier Collection (which is 100 years old). You can search these databases to see if you can find anything of interest or, you never know, you might find a picture of a relative from a 100 years ago. Go one, you know you want a peek!
It's the 75th Anniversary of VE Day and we have a superb digital exhibition to show you as the Centre cannot be open due to Covid-19.
75th anniversary of ending of World War 2: As the Centre is closed due to the Covid-19 Pandemic we have staged this exhibition digitally on the website for the VE Day 75 year celebrations.
The interruption to normal opening has caused us to reschedule our seasonal exhibitions planned for the next few years. Here is our new schedule:
Classic and Vintage Vehicle Day 2020
In the current Coronavirus pandemic and lcokdown we have unfortunately cancelled the annual "Classic and Vintage Vehicle Day" for this year. The Centre is also closed for the forseeable future.
We have revamped the entrance and lobby to the centre for the 2019 season making it a more attractive and useable welcome for the visitor.
We have also introduced audio guide equipment for visitors to use to explain some of the key parts of the museum exhibition as they walk around it.
